The short answer

Create a dated service log for each vehicle and keep the supporting invoices with it. Record the mileage and work performed, then distinguish confirmed repairs from estimates, recommendations and missing history.

When a shop asks when a part was last replaced, a folder of unlabelled photos is hard to use. A service record becomes useful when you can connect the job, the vehicle, the date and the odometer reading without reconstructing the whole story.

What belongs in a car service log?

Record routine maintenance, repairs and inspections as separate completed events. Keep enough detail to understand what happened later: a vague entry like ‘service’ is less useful than the actual work on the invoice.

  • Vehicle identity and the service date.
  • Odometer reading and mileage units.
  • The work actually completed, with parts or fluids when documented.
  • Shop or DIY details and the amount paid.
  • A legible invoice, receipt or supporting document.

Rebuild old history without filling gaps with guesses

Start with invoices you already have, emails from shops and paper records from previous owners. Ask a shop for copies of work it performed if you need them. If a record has no mileage, leave that uncertainty visible rather than using today’s reading.

A digital garage organizes the history you add. Adding a VIN does not establish a complete history of every repair, accident or owner. A service-log app and a commercial vehicle-history report answer different questions.

Make the next service easier

Before an appointment, review recent repairs and the relevant receipts. Note whether a symptom appeared before or after the work. After the visit, keep the final invoice and update the log, rather than leaving a quote as if it were proof that the repair was completed.

Put it into practice

How to do this in Louro

  1. Open the correct car in Louro’s Garage and check its identifying details.
  2. Choose Log service from the vehicle’s service area and record the completed work using the invoice.
  3. Keep the supporting document in the vehicle’s Documents area where available on your plan.
  4. Review the service timeline before the next shop visit and add the new work afterward.
